>Description:
My FreeBSD access point will always eventually fail with the following messages:

Mar 5 15:07:48 zaurak kernel: re0: discard frame w/o packet header
Mar 5 15:10:42 zaurak last message repeated 2 times
Mar 5 15:12:31 zaurak kernel: ath0: discard frame w/o packet header
Mar 5 15:13:40 zaurak kernel: re0: discard frame w/o packet header
Mar 5 15:13:56 zaurak kernel: re0: discard frame w/o packet header
Mar 5 15:14:40 zaurak kernel: ath0: stuck beacon; resetting (bmiss count 4)
Mar 5 15:14:40 zaurak kernel: ath0: ath_reset: unable to reset hardware; hal status 0
Mar 5 15:15:31 zaurak kernel: ath0: stuck beacon; resetting (bmiss count 4)
Mar 5 15:15:31 zaurak kernel: ath0: ath_reset: unable to reset hardware; hal status 0
Mar 5 15:15:58 zaurak kernel: re0: discard frame w/o packet header

(ath0 is the access point, re0 is the LAN link)

Bringing the interface up/down a few times will solve the problem for awhile, but eventually the only solution (if I want more than 20 minutes or so of connectivity) is rebooting the access point.

It will then work well for another two days or so.

I have been having this problem since *at least* 7.0-BETA2. (I used the same wireless card as an Ap on a previous computer, running 6.1-STABLE but without WPA2, I don't remember seeing this issue back then.. but that was long ago :-))

I am connecting to the wireless network via a 2200BG intel card:
iwi0@pci0:2:4:0:        class=0x028000 card=0x27018086 chip=0x42208086 rev=0x05 hdr=0x00
    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device     = 'MPCI3B  driverIntel PRO/Wireless 2200BG'
    class      = network

The access point is:
ath0@pci0:5:1:0:        class=0x020000 card=0x5a001385 chip=0x0013168c rev=0x01 hdr=0x00
    vendor     = 'Atheros Communications Inc.'
    device     = 'AR5212, AR5213 802.11a/b/g Wireless Adapter'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet
>How-To-Repeat:
Connect to the wireless network, eventually the problem manifests itself.

Hi Sam, I heared that RObert has similiar problems as mentioned within this
ticket, can you follow-up on this one and tell the submitter what we expect
for further debugging and potential solution?

Thanks!

 I have changed from RSN to WPA:

   authmode WPA privacy ON deftxkey UNDEF TKIP 2:128-bit

  ap:
  media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect mode 11g <hostap>

 Will report my findings as soon as I have more information on whether it
 solved my problem or not.

 Thanks.

State-Changed-Why:
Start by providing the system description (e.g. dmesg) and how the
network is setup/configured. Then simplify the system by removing
security from the ap.

When your ap stops working does it stop xmit'ing? receiving? sending
out beacons? Did you try a different client card than a 2200BG?

 I am using hostapd.

 hostapd.conf:
 interface=ath0
 ctrl_interface=/var/run/hostapd

 ssid=zaurak_wifi
 auth_algs=1

 wpa=1
 wpa_passphrase=...
 wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
 wpa_pairwise=CCMP TKIP

 ath0 is configured on rc.conf as:
 ifconfig_ath0="mode 11g ssid zaurak_wifi mediaopt hostap hidessid
 channel 5 pureg wme -apbridge"
 ifconfig_ath0="inet x.x.x.x netmask 255.255.255.0"

 (On a related note, this does not work, and I need to copy-paste the 1st
 line as parameters to ifconfig to make the wireless AP come to life)

 $ ifconfig ath0

 When the AP dies, I get the following on my laptop:

 iwi0: link state changed to DOWN
 iwi0: firmware stuck in state 4, resetting

 This seems to be a consequence of the AP 'vanishing'. As far as I can
 tell, it stops transmitting and sending beacons altogether.

 It doesn't come back on it's own, I need to down/up the interface
 (usually having to wait awhile until trying to up it again) before it
 works again (and after it happens the first time after a reboot, it will
 not last for long).
 --
 I have not tried with any other client card other than the 2200BG, I do
 not possess any other.
 --

 I will reconfigure the AP without security in several days and report back.

 By the way, I just got the following panic while using the wireless
 connection, the memory dump hung and I was able to see various "re0:
 discard packet w/o header" messages in the console preceeding the panic:

 re0: discard frame w/o packet header
 re0: discard frame w/o packet header
 re0: discard frame w/o packet header

The code has been so extensively re-worked over the past few years that
this PR is probably obsolete by now. Let us know if it is not.
