I am new to unix. I installed FreeBSD v 5.4 on my Inspiron 1150 laptop to experiment with UNIX. Following the installation, the cdrom would not mount, even though, during boot-up, the cd drive is displayed as "acd0". I've tried "mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0 /cdrom", but I continue to get input/output errors. Using "ls /dev/*cd*", it comes back "/dev/acd0".

When I reboot the computer with a bootable cd in the drive, the light blinks, but the laptop boots to bsd on the harddrive.

How do I mount the cdrom and/or make the cd drive available at boot-up? It was working before I installed freeBSD.

This sounds like either your cd or your cd-rom is broken.
Regarding the bootup, try changing the boot order in your bios (F2 or Del
 at boot time).
But I'm quite sure the disc itself is the problem. Have you tried with
 another disk?

In general if you are having problems like this you should ask for help on
one of the mailing lists (e.g. freebsd-stable) rather than filing a bug report.
We try to keep the PR database for easily identified issues that affect
everyone.
