 i unplugged the usb mouse
 then the keyboard worked
 i rebooted
 then a ps/2 mouse worked
 following that i hotplugged the usb mouse  and it worked
 it has worked on any reboot after
 did the kernel change its own config?
 but all seems well now
 i had seen this very same problem on another forum
 and he had to recompile the kernel
 but its working well now
