 i unplugged the usb mouse
 then the keyboard worked
 i rebooted

following that i hotplugged the usb mouse and it worked
it has worked on any reboot after

 but all seems well now
i had seen this very same problem on another forum
and he had to recompile the kernel
 but its working well now
