FreeBSD pearl.starfire.mn.org 4.9-STABLE FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE #2: Tue Feb 17 14:19:48 CST 2004 john@dexter.starfire.mn.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PEARL i386

>Description:
The installation CD for both 4.9 and 5.2.1 boots. 4.9 will then install from the CD, but the system booted from the hard drive does not recognize the CD. 5.2.1 after it boots from the CD will not even recognize it for installation. I've tried this with both my CD and a friend's compatible Multi-Bay DVD. On the 4.9-STABLE system booted from the hard-drive, I see "ata0-slave: ATA identify retries exceeded".

I have searched the mailing lists, FAQ's, other problem reports, and hardware lists with no success. I'm willing to spend some time fiddling with the driver as long as I'm not just poking in the dark. I'd be very happy to alter some driver parameters, such as the timeout or retry counts, to see if that makes a difference, but would like some guiding wisdom.

I realize that this problem may be fairly hardware-specific, even though I've tried it with two otherwise known-good drives, and I am very willing to work with someone who can provide some guidance.
>How-To-Repeat:
Boot 5.2.1 install CD, then try to access the CD. Or, install 4.9-STABLE, and try to use the CD after booting from the hard drive.
