>Description:
My toshiba p25 s509 laptop freezes at boot even off the install cd's. I've tried using several different duplicate ( to insure it wasn't an iso bug)coppies of 5.x and all versions from 5.0 to the current 5.2.1 from ftp.freebsd.org ftp5.freebsd.org and ftp6.freebsd.org. None work. This machine is a dual boot the first partition is windows xp pro.
here is a paste from dmesg off the same machine after installing 4.9 stable.

Subject: Re: i386/63776: FreeBSD 5.x freezes during boot on a toshiba p25 s509 series

I was trying to boot 5.2.1 using the iso images on a Toshiba satelite P20
and having it hang. It was stopping on setting up the cbb0 device. I was
trying to boot 5.2.1 using the iso images on a Toshiba satelite P20 and
 having it hang.

Somewhere else on a google search I had read about building a custom boot CD
and putting the following commands in the OS conf file to build it:
 nodevice cbb
 nodevice pccard
 nodevice cardbus
 device card 1
 device pcic

It also mentioned to try setting hw.pci.allow_unsupportable_io_range="1".
in the boot loader.conf file as an alternative.

I did not want to build a custom boot fiule so I did the following:
 1) booted on CD
 2) when the OS selection screen is shown I choose boot the loader
 3) at the OK prompt I typed
 	set hw.pci.allow_unsupportable_io_range="1"
       boot

and the system got to the standard sysinstall screens.

I have tried the solution you mentioned without any luck using fresh =
 disks
 and new 5.2.1 iso's from ftp5,ftp6 <ftp://ftp5,ftp6/> and =
 ftp13.freebsd.net
 <ftp://ftp13.freebsd.net/> .

 =20

I have spent many years using FreeBSD and successfully deploying it on a
variety of platforms and have tried just about every possible solution =
 using
various boot options without any success.

I would like to note that a colleague of mine had a similar problem with =
 the
a Toshiba p20 and that the solution mentioned by Gary worked for him =
 with
 limited success.

He was able to install FreeBSD but after 5 successful subsequent boots =
 the
same problem occurred and even adding=20

 set hw.pci.allow_unsupportable_io_range=3D"1"

to a boot config didn't help.

 =20

On attempt to boot off the disks afterwards he managed to achieve a
successful boot to the installer on 1 out of every 5 tries=20

 =20

 Very Odd no ?

 =20

 I'm at a loss myself .

 =20

If it's any consolation all versions of sunOS from 5.6 to current fail =
 due
to problems with the Toshiba cardbus as well.

 =20

So at this point it's fair to say this Bug still exists and still has =
 not
been fixed, nor is there an effective workaround.

(message should have read as follow)

On subsequent attempts to boot off the disks afterwards he managed to
achieve a successful boot to the installer on 1 out of every 5 tries

     Very Odd no ?

     I'm at a loss myself .

If it's any consolation all versions of sunOS from 5.6 to current fail
due to problems with the Toshiba cardbus as well.

So at this point it's fair to say this Bug still exists and still has
not been fixed, nor is there an effective workaround.

Can the original submitter verify that setting hw.pci.enable_io_modes=0 fixes
 the problem?

This should now be fixed in HEAD and RELENG_5. Can anyone confirm that?

I have successfully verified that this is no longer an issue as of 5.3
-RELEASE and I can also confirm this bug is not present in HEAD of
RELENG_5's code either. Thank you every one for the feed back and for
fixing this issue in a timely manner. Yet another example to me of why
FreeBSD is one of the best operating systems available today.

 Sincerely Joshua Harris
