System: FreeBSD barney.computinginnovations.com 5.2-BETA FreeBSD 5.2-BETA #5: Sun Nov 30 20:09:49 CST 2003 root@barney.computinginnovations.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

i386, FreeBSD 5.2-BETA, SATA disk using a SiI 3112 SATA150 controller, using standard GENERIC kernel and system
>Description:
System hangs on any large amount of disk IO. The system will hang, not allowing any user input, no choice but to reset the system. The system will usually have a DMA_Write error, and some interupt problems, finally ending with these error messages scrolling on the console:
ad4: timeout sending command=ca
ad4: timeout sending command=ca

The precise hardware I have is an Adaptec SATA 1210SA RAID controller, in non-RAID mode having only one disk attached. The hard disk is a new Maxtor 6Y120M0 120 GB drive. The drive has FreeBSD partioned to about 1/2 the capacity, in 3 slices 5 GB /, 47 GB /usr, 5 GB swap.

This is the generic system and kernel, not customized at all.
>How-To-Repeat:
I usually just try to cvsup and rebuild the system in multiuser. There are no other users using this server.
	cvsup to current
	make buildworld
	make kernel
	reboot
	mergemaster -p
	make installworld
	mergemaster

The system usually breaks down in the make buildworld, or in the make kernel, or in the make installworld. I had the 11/29 snapshot release break on an upgrade install doing fsck on /usr.

>Fix:

None that I have found. This SATA controller is getting into wider use on motherboards as well as add-on cards like I use. I am not the only one experiencing these interrupt and DMA problems.

Subject: Re: i386/59895: [hang] system hangs from disk IO errors [SATA]
&& Re: i386/63430: [ata] TIMEOUT - ATA READ
Date: Mon, 04 Oct 2004 14:49:07 +0000

Is there any status on this PR, I have found that my server is exhibiting=
the same issue that this PR is questioning, and this is using the same S=
ATA controller, but on the Intel board (dmesg below)... can somebody PLEA=
SE look at this. I have seen this issue brought up at no least of 4 times=
ont he mailing list and trice as a PR. I know we're all running 4.10, bu=
t it's supposed to be STABLE, and it's truly not. I'd be willing to run w=
hatever debugging commands are nessesary to help with diagnosing this for=
any willing developer who will make an honest attempt at fixing it. This=
problem with SATA has been around for close to a year... what's the deal=
 ?

State-Changed-Why:

in software in all cases.
Anyhow try out 6.0 and if that still fails, change the hw..
