No can do (AFAIK) -- installing from CD.
>Description:
Installing from CD on an NEC Versa 4080H (40M RAM), though I've gotten this same bug on a P233MMX (64M RAM) based system too (didn't get it on my Duron 1GHz, 256M RAM), everything is cool until it gets to start copying the files over, right after it runs newfs. It attempts to start the emergency shell on VTY4 and apparently succeeds, since I can switch to it, but right after that, a Signal 11 is caught. Always.
>How-To-Repeat:
      Follow the procedure just described.
>Fix:
Tried the suggestions under Errata/Late Break News, but that didn't help any.

State-Changed-When: Sun Sep 22 13:18:15 PDT 2002
State-Changed-Why:
Wild guess: the machine is running out of swap. Have you configured any
swap space in the disklabel editor? If so, how much? If not, try giving
it as much as you can afford and reduce iteratively if it works.

I'm trying to install using 5.1-Release miniinst CD.

My hardware is a dual athlon, 256 MB ECC ram, new hard
 drive
and cdrom. Linux installs and runs smoothly. I went
to replace Linux with BSD after wiping out the existing
 partions.

I boot from the miniinst 5.1 cd, do the sysinstall using
the whole disk for a big slice and choosing all the default
values. Right after the "are you sure you want to do this"
and repartition your hard drive message I get a message
about a signal 11 caught. If I look on the other console
on ctl-alt-f2 i see something like:

 ad0: hard error cmd=read fsbn 63 statuus=59 error=04
DEBUG: Signal 11 caught! That's bad!

I'd be suprised if this was a drive issue as this is the
only application which appears to hit this.

I've successfully installed linux twice on this machine, it
 is otherwise new.

getting the signal 11 caught right after I'm done with the sysinstall
