>Description:
Now we have many server:Dell6400+DEll220S(disk array) for mail system storage. CPU: P3,xeon,2*742MHz;Memory:3G; RAID Card: perc3(AMI raid card)+1.2T Data. I used freebsd 4.5 on three server . But it crashed many times when i use tar xvf or chown -R some data directory. And i haven't found any useful message in /var/log/messages. When i open "options DDB" in the kernel, and add (dumpdev="/dev/da0s1b" dumpdir="/home/crash") to /etc/rc.conf, i still get any dump at /home/crash. By the way, after i test, i found that freebsd4.5,4.6,4.6.2 crashed also. :( Could some body can help me to give me some advice? very thanks.
>How-To-Repeat:
i suggest u can found the platform like my description, dell6400+perc3(ami raid card) and large filesystem. then execute several command related to io, such as tar ,chown etc. Do it on data directory is better. I think u can see freebsd crash again and again. :(
>Fix:
my kernel conf: device amr # AMI MegaRAID

State-Changed-Why:
This sounds very much like a hardware problem. The two most probable
reasons being marginal RAM or disks. Try replacing each of these
components and see if you get a stable system. You can find a free
RAM tester at www.memtest86.com.
