>Description:
We have a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW motherboard with the AMD 760MPX chipset, and the onboard Promise Fasttrack 100 IDE-RAID and maxtor 160GB drives. When booting off the 4.6 CD, the install will panic during the boot process if the drives are left connected to the on-board promise ATA 100 IDE-RAID. If we disconnect all drives from the onboard promise ATA 100 IDE RAID and only hook up a drive to the master IDE controller on the motherboard, we can boot up and install 4.6. Then, when we reattach the drives to the onboard promise ATA 100 the system will crash during bootup after displaying several messages similar to the following (one line for each drive on the controller):
ad0 maxtor 4G160J8 Read command Timeout tag=0 serv=0 resetting trying fallback to PIO mode
ata3: resetting devices
then kernel panic (on 4.5 it would boot up but these drives would be stuck in PIO mode and therefore terribly slow).

As indicated in the 4.6 release notes, we tried setting hw.ata.tags="1" in /boot/loader.conf to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
>How-To-Repeat:
happens every boot.
>Fix:
none known other than switching to linux which works with this onboard controller just fine (god forbid I have to switch - please help!)

Just to post a follow up to bug 39548. The problem can be duplicated
only when connecting a 160GB drive to the Promise Fasttrack 100
IDE-RAID. If we attach a disk that is smaller in size, everything works
fine. We are using the following 160GB Maxtor drive on our Promise
 Fasttrack 100 IDE-RAID:

           ad6: 156334MB <Maxtor 4G160J8> [317632/16/63] at ata3-master
 UDMA100

The 160GB drive works fine when it is connected to the regular
on-board IDE controller (it is a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW board).

 Thanks.

   Orrie

I have a followup to this problem:

We have a machine of following config:

 Maiboard: Gigabyte 7DXR
 CPU: Athlon XP 1600+
 Memory: 256MB
SCSI: BusLogic BT 956 SCSI Controller
 Tape: Sony AIT1 external drive
 Network Cards: 3 x 3COM (xl0)
Extra Controllers: Promise TX2 133 Controller

Disks: 2 x Maxtor 60 GB Disks bound in one mirror set (ar0) using the onboa=
 rd Promise Raid controller.

 1 x Maxtor 160GB Drive connected to promice TX2

The system was functional under 4.5 Release without problems, it also worke=
d fine in the beginning under 4.6 Relese but after 3 days problems begun ap=
pearing: Some files on Raid Set suddenly became corrupt, then after some ti=
me and filesystem operations they where not corrupt anymore (Absolutely wie=
 rd).

We did a CVSUP to the newest 4.6_stable and did a make buildworld, make ins=
tallworld. During the install system complained about some manpages being c=
 orrupt.

After reboot the system is dead, kernel says that it cannot find init.

We are currently reinstalling 4.5 on the machine to see if it is not a hard=
 ware failure.

 Regards

 Kirill

State-Changed-Why:
There are issues with certain old Promise controllers and the
48bit access method (used for >137G drives).
I'm working on a fix for this..
