ASUS TXP4, Pentium II 166MHz 160MB memory
System: FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE GENERIC boot floppies

>Description:

I have been running FreeBSD 3.4 (plus KAME IPv6 stack) on my machine
with no problems. However, no version of the system since 4.0 has
been runnable on the hardware. When I boot up with the FreeBSD 4.5
install diskettes in verbose mode, it lets me run configuration with
no problems, and it probes the PCI bus without difficulty, but stops
after the message "ex_isa_identify()" and won't respond to anything
other than the reset button. My hardware includes:

ASUS TXP4 motherboard
Intel Pentium II 166 MHz
160MB SDRAM (128MB + 32MB)
Generic NE2000 ISA network card
Boca 6-port serial board
NCR PCI SCSI card (no boot ROM)
Generic PCI VGA display controller
3Com 3C509 PCI network card

What should I do next?

I tried a different motherboard (FIC VA-503+) (which works fine in other
machines on my network) and the problem did not go away. I finally
isolated it to my generic NE2000 network card. Apparently the "ex"
driver hangs up the machine when the NE2000 is there. Everything
 is fine without the NE2000.

But now I'm finding that the "sym" driver believes my NCR SCSI card
is defective, although it too has been running just fine under 3.4
for more than two years. I built a kernel with the "ncr" driver
and without the "sym" driver and got an endless loop of error
 messages. Any suggestions?
