>Description:
I attempted to install FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE,4.3-RELEASE and 4.3-CURRENT
on my PC. The install hangs up right after I resolve the hardware conflicts
when it says "Probing Devices.... (This may take a while)"

However, I was able to install 3.5.1 with no problems, eventhough it did not
recognize my CD-ROM. I installed it from a FAT32 partition from another disk.

My hardware configuration :
-Compaq Deskpro EN Series (Intel 600 MHz, 256 MB RAM)
-Intel Pro/100+ Alert on LAN* Management Adapter - IRQ 11 - (I/O) 0x2000-0x203F

-Intel 82443BX Chipset,PentiumII Procesor to AGP Controller - (I/O) 0x1000-0x1FFF, 0x03B0-0x03BB, 0x03C0-0x03DF
-Intel 82371AB/EB (ISA,IDE Controller, USB-UHCI) -IRQ 11 -(I/O) 0x2060-0x206F for IDE and 0x2040-0x205F for USB
-Keyboard - IRQ 1 - (I/O Port) 0x0060-0x0060, 0x0064 - 0x0064
-PS/2 Mouse - IRQ 12
-Two Hard Disks (Disk1 -Primary Master- Western Digital-20GB and
                 Disk2 -Primary Slave - Maxtor - 30GB)
both attached to my primary IDE Channel - IRQ 14 - (I/O) 0x01F0 - 0x01F7,0x03F6 - 0x03F6
-Memorex 48 X CD-ROM (ATAPI) - Secondary Slave - Secondary IDE
Channel- IRQ 15- (I/O) 0x0170 - 0x0177, 0x0376 - 0x0376
-Standard Floppy Controller -IRQ 6 - (I/O) 0x3F0 - 0x3F5, 0x3F7 - 0x3F7
-ESS 1868 Audio Device- IRQ 5 - (I/O) 0x0220 - 0x022F, 0x0388 - 0x038B, 0x0330 - 0x0331
-Serial Port 1 - IRQ 4 - (I/O) 0x03F8 - 0x03FF
-Serial Port 2 - IRQ3 -(I/O) 0x02F8 - 0x02FF

-U.S.Robotics Fax PCI Win Modem - IRQ 11 - (I/O) 0x2070 - 0x2077

Software Inventory on my PC:
- DISK 1 has WINDOWS 98, WINDOWS 2000 and RedHat Linux 7.1 and this disk is full
- DISK 2 is brand new and now has FreeBSD 3.5.1 installed on it after I was
unable to install 4.2, 4.3 and 4.3 Current.

>How-To-Repeat:

Machine with same configuration (more importantly with the Intel Pro/100 LAN
Adapter) should reproduce this error.

>Fix:

Disabling the Intel Pro/100 LAN Adapter from BIOS took me to the next stage of
installation.

Looks like it was my Win Modem causing the problem. I was able to =
install FreeBSD 4.3 after I removed my Win Modem. My Intel Ether Express =
Card was detected properly and I don't have any problems now.

This case may be considered closed.

 Thanks
