Downloaded and burned a cd of File:FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE-i386-livefs.iso. Booting from this CD opened the freebsd install menus. The disk label is for the live cd.

This is the correct CD. It is a livefs and on a livefs cd you have the
option of doing a net install or dropping to the Fixit prompt via the menus.
