Please help me, I am installing 6.2 or 7.0 (same result)from a set of CDs.

The PC boots, goes through fdisk successfully, configures file system successfully and the following is reported on a blue screen: "The file system installs successfully"

Thereafter when the installation gets stuck and keeps coming up with "Unable to transfer the base distribution from acd0. Do you want to try to retrieve it again? Yes / No"

It would appear that the system is unable to get the configuration from the CD for some obscure reason. This is strange because the disk surface is perfect, I booted off the same disk and I have installed off the same disk previously. I have tried other CDs with the same result. Consequently I am unable to proceed further as thereafter the rest of the installation complains of the same problem.

I am unable to find help in the docs on how to proceed and the handbook assumes that this part goes successfully.....

Kindly advise.

So far this is not a problem ticket in my understanding because there is
no problem (Yet). I understand though that it's darned hard to install
something if acd0 fails (But that could still be due too many things to
call this someting a problem within FreeBSD, its ofcourse not ruled out
 but lets proceed):

Can you try to install this from a FTP server instead? so bootup with the
disks provided, and then continue installation through the web? That will
get the required packages from the internet (Ftp.freebsd.org for example,
or rather advised is: ftp.countrycode.freebsd.org which would be
ftp.nl.freebsd.org if I where to use this). It will then install them, and
probably bootup the system, if acd0 isn't recognized there we can continue
trying to find why it isn't recognized etc. (Perhaps USB CD drive? There
were changes to that code recently; but from memory; That didnt reach
7.0/6.3-RELEASE, not sure about the 7.0 part though).

If you have follow-up information, please reply-all to this message (make
sure freebsd-gnats-submit@freebsd.org is in the CC list) so that it can be
 properly recorded within the ticket.

 Thanks,
 remko
