the FAQ says:

--- (in Q 11.2) ------
Note: The above describes the default X implementation installed. It is still possible to install either implementation by following the instructions in the entry for 20040723 in /usr/ports/UPDATING.
-----------------------

Problems:

- there is no such entry in UPDATING. There probably never was.
certainly not in any of today's version, nor in any HEAD version
of that time, (if you can trust CVS on that)

- given the multitude of parallel versions of this file and the
high frequency and opaque and seemingly arbitrary way entries
come and go on these lists, a reference to this document from
  the FAQ is not useful.

State-Changed-When: Sun Jul 2 10:16:37 UTC 2006
State-Changed-Why:
The entry is there:

20040723:
AFFECTS: users of FreeBSD-current, users of X.Org
AUTHOR: anholt@FreeBSD.org

This lists the information on how to proceed.

But perhaps you mean a reference like:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/x-install.html ?

Which also lists that information (section 5.3.1)

State-Changed-Why:
After my reply on 3/7 and Giorgos reply i think we explained what
went wrong here. Since no feedback was given after the emails
were sent i believe this PR to be solved.

If there is any feedback, please submit it, we can reopen the
ticket if needed.

Thanks however for taking the time to report this. We (FreeBSD)
really appriciate that!
