Hello, I am a user of Freebsd, I use the operative system for
to administer a node of Internet in Paraguay , we are ISP (internet service
provider)
I have 02 server with network adapter compatible NE2000 and work
with TCP-IP and Ethernet to 10 Mbits.
My problem is with a computer COMPAQ because does not recognize
the network adaptere that has and it does not has slots ISA, alone EISA and PCI...
Please may be to inform me of a network adapter EISA or PCI
that could use to 10Mbits and that the system recognize.
I proven with SMC 9332BDT EtherPower 10/100 PCI but I could not make to work it
to 10Mbits , onluy work at 100Mbits ( Fast - ethernet)

Please excuse my Enlglish , this is not very good
I thank if they can help me
Heartfelt Regards from Paraguay.

You should be able to use any ISA or PCI card in that
system. EISA slots support ISA cards just fine.

But your Compaq may come with on-board Lance Ethernet
(possibly in form of the AMD Ethernet SCSI Combo chip),
and you will be able to use that under FreeBSD, but will
have to configure the "lnc0" device driver for the
 non-standard port address used.

(I can check this out, if you send me a VERBOSE (!) boot
log (type "-v" at the "Boot: " prompt) from that Compaq.)

If you don't have that Lance compatible chip on your
system's motherboard, then depending on the network load
a simple PCI NE2000 clone (< US$25) will be sufficient.

I leave it to others to comment on bus-master PCI cards,
which are more appropriate for a server-class machine.
