After boot-up, netstat -r shows nothing, not even localhost entries.
Netstat -i shows only the ethernet interface (ed0). No entries
shown for loopback, tun0, etc. (I have only one ethernet
interface and one modem interface on this machine.)
Note: This problem didn't occur under 2.2.1. I tried to make sure
that all network settings were kept the same as in 2.2.1 in the /etc
files, though I did erase the partitions and start over when I
installed 2.2.2.
>How-To-Repeat:
Always occurs.
>Fix:
Workaround only:
Run user mode ppp. After it connects all routing table and
interface entries will be correct. After ppp is ended,
all routing table and interface entries will remain correct.

There is something very weird with your setup.

tun0 is meaningless without an attached process. Don't try to
configure anything for this interface at the shell level, but rather
put this configuration into the ppp scripts where they belong.

State-Changed-Why:

This problem is not easily reproducible outside your environment.
Please, do not attempt to ifconfig things like tun0 from the rc
scripts, and help us identifying any remaining problems by providing
some more details.
