 What are WSW and NSW? Both seem to produce reasonable numbers of
 hits in google. (I guess NSW is New South Wales and WSW is
 west-south-west, being from the far side of the globe I have no
 idea which is likely to be more correct for the Newcastle Morning
 Herald).

 Newcastle is in New South Wales. WSW means nothing in this context.
