FreeBSD www.toejam.com 4.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE #0: Mon Nov 20 13:02:55 GMT 2000 jkh@bento.FreeBSD.org:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386
>Description:
I installed the binary compatibility distributions through
'/stand/sysinstall/' and all of my password files were destroyed. All the
accounts from the system including the root password were deleted and the
'htpasswd' passwords were missing as well. I retried the same type of
update on freeBSD 4.5 current-release i386 and it was the same issue.
Not sure if you call this a bug, but maybe at least a warning to the
server admin that this may happen before updating the binary
compatibility distributions.
>How-To-Repeat:
Build a server using the freeBSD operating system. Configure
accounts as well as set the root password. Install a few programs
(Apache, mySQL, GLIB, etc...). Run '/stand/install/', 'configure',
'distributions', and install the binary compatibility packages.

State-Changed-Why:
Installing a new release `on top' of an old installation should always
be done *after* a backup of important data. It is not a safe way of
upgrading a running system.

The originator stated that he tried to install the compat
distribution, not that he did a binary upgrade. He may have done a
binary upgrade by mistake, but until we've confirmed that the PR
 should remain open.

Just a note to mention that the possibility to add compatability
libraries from usr/src was removed over 2 years ago (rev. 1.235 of
dist.c) and is no longer present in 6.0-RELEASE or higher.
The current method of adding these via ports/packages
 does not cause this error.

State-Changed-Why:
Close report as it is believed not to apply to recent FreeBSD versions. If
you experience this problem again, or are able to reproduce it on a recent
version (ideally 6.0 or higher), please let us know. Thanks!
