You don't mention what version of X server your running. I'm running FreeBSD
7.0-Beta3+ with patches to xorg 7.3.

Suggest updating to something more current, and seeing if that eliminates some
 or all of your problems.

You are using an old system (FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4) Update to at least 6.2,
 and try again.

I've used mplayer with the xv driver on a radeon under 6.2-RELEASE and
6-STABLE without problems on amd64. Also update X to the latest version
 in ports.

Recently I've been using 7.0-BETA. Mplayer works fine with the xv
driver. BTW, I'm not sure that the XVideo extension that the xv driver
uses has anything to do with DRI.

Check that the XVideo extension is used by Xorg:=20
 'grep XVideo /var/log/Xorg.0.log'
