Can't get as far as issuing a uname
>Description:
Attempting to install from CD amd64 FreeBSD 5.3, 5.4 RC4 or 6.0 on my Athlon 64 laptop causes the kernel to hang just after the loader prompt, irrespective of whether I disable ACPI, enable debug mode or any other option on the menu. Linux for amd64 works just fine. i386 FreeBSD works just fine, just not amd64 FreeBSD.

Spec is: Clevo D400J, Mobile Athlon 3400 with VIA K8M800 chipset and S3 Unichrome graphics. It has 1Gb of RAM and is pretty new - I bought it a few weeks ago. It's a pretty vanilla athlon64 laptop. It does NOT have a floppy drive.

>How-To-Repeat:
Just try installing any FreeBSD mentioned above on this kind of laptop. It hangs on kernel load.
>Fix:
Is it possible that Mobile Athlon 64's are not supported? It's definitely an Athlon NOT a Sempron as I have x64 Linux running on it too.

 Hi,

I got a similar error as you when I tried my Acer Aspire 1522WLMi with
 FreeBSD 5.3.
It turned out to be a problem with the BIOS setup: There was an entry to
 enable/disable USB legacy support.
If I disabled this, then FreeBSD booted correctly.

 Best regards

 /Kent

Tried this, and it now works fine. Thank you very much for the tip.

Point 1: There really should be an FAQ entry in the amd64 release
notes specifying this problem and workaround

Point 2: It's still a bug in the amd64 implementation as i386 works
 fine.

 Cheers,
 Niall

To submitter: Is this still a problem with more recent versions of
FreeBSD (6.3 or 7.0)? If so, are you able to try the patch at
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/usb/ehci_pci.c.diff?r1=1.29;r2=1.30
(or upgrading to 6-STABLE or 7-STABLE) and seeing if you still see
the issue?
