In booting an AlphaServer 2100A RM, the computer does an unexpected machine check while probing the PCI/EISA bus:

The machine check occurs in any 5.x smp or uniprocessor kernel, it also occurs in any smp 4.x kernel. but boots safelt into sysinstall in 4.x uniprocessor kernels.
