ZIP: ppa module can't be loaded

Applies to

SuSE Linux: Versions since 4.3
Kernel: Versions up to (including) 2.0.37

Symptom:

The ppa can't be loaded. There are error messages such as

Cause:

Printer support is active in the kernel. In order to check this, please see the file /var/log/messages.

Check with the command cat /proc/ioports, whether 0378-037a is already occupied.

Solution:

Generate a kernel with modularized printer support.

In the section Character Devices set Parallel Printer Support (CONFIG_PRINTER) to M (or N).

Cause 2 :

The Zip drive isn't connected to parallel port Nr. 1.

Solution 2 :

Use the following command to load the ppa module :
modprobe -v ppa ppa_base=0x278
0x278 (2. parallel port) is of course just an example, it is also possible to use other adresses here. Check the BIOS settings and /var/log/messages for activities of the printer driver (lp) in order to find out the correct adress.
Alternatively, you can update to kernel versions 2.2.x and use the parport system that comes with this version. For more information see the linked article below "Parport - General Information".
