Xess is, to say something, the original version. Other companies, that have the source code, operate almost the same product with some changes and own support etc.

XESS Corp. is the owner and author of the NExS
spreadsheet software. We also license versions of the
source code to third parties. They are allowed to sell their
version of the spreadsheet under their own name, and they
can make modifications to the source to fix bugs and add
their own new features. The licensee company is completely
responsible for supporting any customers who purchase their
version of the spreadsheet.
S.u.S.E. only operates Xess by the manufacturer AIS (Applied Information
Systems, Inc.)
