Problems with EIDE harddrives by Gigastorage

Symptom:

The boot process stops during the partition check. A message like the following appears : 
Partition check:
 hda:hda: set_geometry_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: set_geometry_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
.
.
.
unable to read partition table
So far we know of approximately 4 support customers that had this problem. It always happened in conjunction with a harddrive by Gigastore with the ID B5256x. This drive creates the following boot-messages : 
hda: BMI B5256B ENHANCED IDE 2.56 Gigabyte, 
hda: BMI B5300B ENHANCED IDE 3.00 Gigabyte, etc.
In all known cases the problem only appeared when the drive was connected to a controller with Triton chipset (i82371).

Cause:

Maybe the manufacturer hasn't totally followed the specifications - this is just an assumption -.

Solution:

Unfortunately sofar no solution exists... :-(
