mandb: can't load libgz.so

SuSE Linux: Versions 5.2 Demo CD to 5.2, 1st Edition

Symptom:

After the installation of S.u.S.E. Linux 5.2, the command man fails or mandb aborts with the above error message during the installation and after each call to this program.

Cause:

During the installation libgz (package libz, series gra) was not installed. The package dependencies were not set correctly for this package.

Solution:

Start YaST (you must be root). In the menue

Choose/Install packages
  --> Change/create configuration
    --> gra   All about graphics

Remark :

Another cause, similar symptome :

There might still be an old libgz and/or libz in /usr/i486-linuxaout/lib/. Please check, whether you still need these libraries. If not, remove them.
