ldconfig emits a warning

Symptom:

During the execution of YaST the program ldconfig emits messages like the following : pre> /sbin/ldconfig: warning: canīt open /usr/X11R6/lib/liblm.so (no such file or directory) usw. or / and:

/sbin/ldconfig: 
 warning: canīt open /usr/lib/libgtk.so (no such file or directory) usw.

Cause:

ldconfig finds symbolic links when searching the library directories. Normally these point to dynamic libraries. However in the above mentioned case the real library is missing, so ldconfig can't open it.

There are several possible reasons why the library is missing :

1. The library was accidently removed

2. The libraries were uninstalled with YaST

3. You have used the Live-CD. Then you have removed it from the drive without detaching it in YaST

Solution:

1. You took the Live-CD knowingly out of the drive at boot-time in order to read in another CD. You can ignore the error-message in this case since all programs are available in the system that are necessary to access the CD. At the next boot-up you should put the Live-CD into the drive again.

2. You don't want this behaviour. The erroneous links that were output by ldconfig should be erased. Login as root. There are two possible methods for the erasing of the files :

   • Put in the Live-CD and start YaST. In the menu System administration you will find a menu called Configure Live-system. Open this menu and choose Disconnect CD live filesystem. If this menu item is not available or if this procedure doesn't work, just follow the recepy below.

   • In order to remove the links manually please enter the directories that were specified by ldconfig. Remove (only !!) those links that were output in the error messages of ldconfig. Use the command rm. E.g. :

         cd /usr/X11R6/lib && rm liblm.so
       

It is wise to call YaST again afterwards. Since you removed all erroneous links, ldconfig should emit no error-messages anymore
