Reboot is not executed until the next restart

Applicable to
Kernel version: 2.0.x

Symptom:

The system's shutdown is certainly begun after the entry of reboot or shutdown -r now, but no restart is executed.

Cause:

There are computers that have problems with other restart methods but a coldstart. This is why a coldstart (reboot=cold) is executed by default since kernel version 2.0.x.

Solution:

There are parameters, with whose help the kind of the restart can be established: 
 reboot=bios
 reboot=warm
 reboot=cold
 reboot=hard
These parameters can be passed to the kernel either manually at the LILO bootprompt: 
LILO boot: linux reboot=bios
or be entered into /etc/lilo.conf's append line: 
append="reboot=bios"
