The following steps were necessary in order to "calm down" Netscape :
The automatic dial-up during the Communicators start-up can be avoided
by the following entries :
Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Browser starts with "Blank page"
or enter a local adress at
-> Browser starts with "Home page"
A regular connection set-up while Netscape is running is caused
by the mail program. See
Edit -> Preferences -> Mail&Groups -> Mail Server
-> More Options.. -> Check for mail every "10" minutes
These 10 minutes are entered automatically during the installation.
Fortunately this can be switched off.
The nameserver inquiry at start-up of the mail program is caused
by the configured news groups. Even if the news server (like the
Mail server) can be resolved from ´/etc/hosts´, the news servers
visible in the message center are being accessed. I don't know if it
is sufficient to enter them as well into 'hosts'.
However it is apparently not sufficient to erase all chosen
newsgroups since I had to remove a file like ´.newsrc-xyz´ in my
home directory before Netscape was quiet ...
Jochen Rödenbeck" (roe@spl-spindel.de) wrote the following :I recommend to search and remove files like ~/.newsrc-domainname, except for ~/.newsrc-localhost.
