SuSE Linux: Versions since 5.0
It is possible to install both RPM- and TGZ packages manually.
PACKAGE.rpm, enter
rpm -i PACKAGE.rpm
If you want to update an existing package, use the option -U resp.
--update. It is also possible to update packages via ftp :
rpm -i ftp://ftp.suse.de/pub/.../PACKAGE.rpm
Attention : Please use the rpm from the »S.u.S.E. Linux« distribution.
If you're using a "foreign" rpm, you must first change into the Root-diretory
(cd /) in order to ensure, that the install- and uninstall-scripts work
reliably.
You might have to update your version of rpm first (see e.g.
ke_rpm-suse51.html for further information).
In order to install a package PACKAGE.tgz, enter
/sbin/installpkg PACKAGE.tgz
If you want to update an existing TGZ-package, you should first uninstill it with
/sbin/removepkg PACKAGE
After the manual installation of a software package it is highly recommended
to call SuSEconfig which will then perform necessary configurations.
If you install packages with YaST, this happens automatically.
