Linux and Windows NT

1. possibility : Use NTs bootmanager

It is able to start boot sectors as well as their copies. A co-existence of Linux and WinNT can be achieved with the following steps :

Install NT.
Partition the NT drives (Create one data drive with FAT so Linux can write on it)
Install Linux. We will assume /dev/sda3 for the root partition here. Attention ! This partition must respect the 1024 cylinder limitation (1024_Zylinder.html) !
Mount the data drive (e.g. below /dos)

Install LILO in the Linux root partition (i.e. /dev/sda3), not into the MBR ! (You can nevertheless configure a choice of different Linux kernel-images for LILO). You can do this with the following /etc/lilo.conf :

# LILO configuration file
# Start LILO global Section
boot=/dev/sda3                # where LILO should be installed to
backup=/boot/boot.sda3.970428 # Backup of the previous bootsector
prompt
timeout=100     # wait at prompt: 10 s
vga = normal    # force sane state
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /vmlinuz             #   default image to boot
    root = /dev/sda3         # root-partition is here!
    label = Linux
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# Name other Linux kernel images here:
# ...

Install LILO as usual :

   #  /sbin/lilo

Copy the LILO bootsector to a disk that is readable by NT, e.g.
```
   dd if=/dev/sda3 bs=512 count=1 of=/dosen/bootsek.lin
```
Boot NT. Copy the file (bootsek.lin) from the datadisk into the top directory of the NT system drive C: (if it is not yet there).
Add the following entry at the bottom of the file boot.ini (set attributes)
```
 
   c:\bootsek.lin="Linux" 
```
If everything workes as expected, an entry for Linux should be visible in the NT bootmanager during the next reboot !

2. possibility : LILO

Install LILO into the MBR and make NT believe that it is DOS. Here (nt2.html) is more information.

The partition types 82 and 83

Warning ! NT 3.5* and NT 4.0 don't know the partition types 82 and 83 that are used by Linux ! Therefore you should pay attention that no NT program "repairs" the partion table. This might leed to a complete loss of data !
