Installing ntex fonts under TeTeX

Q: How do I install ntex fonts under teTeX?

A: This is not very simple.

The documentation for teTeX is located in /usr/lib/teTeX/ in TETEXDOC.{dvi|tex}. The documentation for different tools, classes, styles, ... in /usr/lib/teTeX/texmf/doc/.

For this purpose you should read the texconfig, texhash and ls-R man pages.

Check in which subdirectory the fonts would be installed (List the packet with tar tvfz). Example: Hebrew fonts would be installed in /usr/lib/texmf/fonts/language/ . This is why the symbolic link /usr/lib/texmf MUST exist (check with ls -l). If it does not exist, create it with

   cd /usr/lib/
   ln -sf teTeX/texmf texmf

Now symbolic links must be still created. With them the (La)TeX, MetaFont and several different programmes' search routines find the corresponding files in the expected places. Two symbolic links are created for this in our example:

	cd /usr/lib/texmf/fonts/source/
	ln -sf ../language .
        cd ../tfm
	ln -sf ../language .

Afterwards call texhash. You could of course sort into the fonts correctly. All .mf files to

     /usr/lib/teTeX/texmf/fonts/source/

and all .tfm files to

      /usr/lib/teTeX/texmf/fonts/tfm/

to call afterwards texhash again.

Hint

Be very careful when installing, otherwise the teTeX installation could overwrite an unknown packet and make it useless by this --- Do not install in any case cm fonts (computer modern) from the NTeX packet at all. They are incompatible with the TeX standard fonts and violate the computer modern fonts' author's copyright. You will find more about this at the URL http://www-cs-staff.stanford.edu/~knuth/cm.html
