YaST refuses, to perform an update of a single package

Symptom:

You want to update a single package - not your entire system - and you start YaST for doing so. This announces you , that you must update first YaST in order to be able to perform the update. YaST refuses to do anything else.

Cause:

YaST does not know, of course, that you want to update only a single package, but it supposes that you want to update the entire system from the running system. This is dangerous and not very clever . That is why YaST refuses to access to the new CD.

Solution:

If you know what you are doing, you can very simply update YaST, while you mount the CD and then install the yast packet. Please proceed as follows:

Mount CD:
- Create the mountpoint (if it does not already exist!):
```
mkdir /cdrom
```
- Mount the inserted CD:
```
mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/CDROM /cdrom
```
  Please replace the above "CDROM" by your CD-ROM's device name, e.g. hdc, scd0, mcd, etc.
Install the YaST packet:
- Please call the following command to install the yast package:
```
/sbin/installpkg /cdrom/suse/a1/yast
```
- Unmount the CD:
```
cd /; umount /cdrom
```
Now you can call the new YaST and update your packet from the new CD.

In general it is recommended, not to update only a single package, but (at least) the entire basis system.

Please pay attention, not to use in any case tar to unpack the packet in the CD, otherwise possible necessary configurations of the respective packet cannot be carried out after the installation.

Furthermore pay attention, that problems in the new YaST's monitor display might appear during an update of single packets in the above described way in old (< 4.2) S.u.S.E. Linux systems. This is to be returned to an old ncurses library. However, this should only be an optical problem, that does not affect to YaST's function capability. If necessary you can also update the ncurses packet. A basis system update is preferable to it.
