gzip is used to compress the font files
(files with extension .gz).
In the past the font files were compressed using the compress
program (files with extension .Z). According to the X11
standard, the font files should be readable in both compression formats.
However, Metro-X and AcceleratedX seem only able to read font files that
were compressed using compress. Since the font files are all
gzipped, they cannot find any .Z-files.
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts. Proceed
as follows for each of these subdirectories.
rm -f fonts.dir
*.gz):
gzip -d *.gz
compress:
compress *.pcf
mkfontdir .
