Title: X-Server doesn't come up

X-Server doesn't come up

SuSE Linux: Versions since 4.2
XFree86: Versions since 3.1.2E

Symptom:

After a (apparently) successfulInstallation of the X server using XF86Setup or xf86config, respectively you enter:

  startx

but nothing happens. You might see a note to re install the X server.

Well, being well informed you have a look at ~/.X.err where you may find the following sentence:

  No Server X in PATH!

  The file XF86_XXXX (binary of X-Server) doesn't seem to be a binary file.
  Please check it or/and install a new X-Server binary.

Cause:

There is no X server installed or the link that should point to the server points to nowhere.

Solution:

Please proceed as follows:

1. Please make sure (best with YaST) if at least one of the following packages is installed:

           xp9k, xw32, x8514, xmach64, xmach8, xmono,
           xs3, xsvga, xvga16, xi128-b
   

   They are located in series x. Or install one of the S.u.S.E. X server

           xmatrox, xsusema64, xtrident, xtseng, xat3d, xglint, xnvidia
   

   (the package should be marked with an [i]!).

   Eventually install the needed X server with YaST.

   You might need to reconfigure the X Window System either using XF86Setup or xf86config.

2. Make sure the following links do exists by entering:

           ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X*
           ls -l /var/X11R6/bin/X*
   

   You should see something simuilar to:

           /var/X11R6/bin/X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SERVER-NAME
           /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X
   

   Here "SERVER-NAME" stands for the selected X Server. This means you have to replace "SERVER-NAME" by the name of your X Server ("Mach64" if you want to install the Mach64 server).

   The S.u.S.E. X Server are named XSuSE_XXXX.

   If these links don't exist you have to create them:

           ln   -s   /var/X11R6/bin/X   /usr/X11R6/bin/X
           ln   -s   /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SERVER-NAME /var/X11R6/bin/X
