fvwm2: alternative windowmanagers

SuSE Linux: Versions since 4.2

Request:

You want to use another windowmanager in S.u.S.E. Linux rather than taking the default fvwm2, e.g. fvwm95.

Procedure:

The files ~/.xinitrc and ~/.xsession check the value of the environment variable WINDOWMANAGER. This variable specifies, which binary (program file) will be started. If the variable isn't set, the default value

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2

According to your preferred windowmanager, you should enter one of the following export lines into your ~/.bashrc :

fvwm, Version 1.24:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm

fvwm2:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2

fvwm95:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm95-2

bowman:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/bowman

afterstep:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep

ctwm:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/ctwm

mwm:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/mwm

kde:

export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/startkde

Hint :

It doesn't matter whether you start the X-Window system from the console with startx or via xdm.
