X: IBM ThinkPad and XFree86

Applies to

SuSE Linux: Versions since 5.0
XFree86: Versions since 3.3

Symptom:

You want to use Linux on an IBM Thinkpad 760, however you come across a couple of different problems with the X server (series x, package xsvga). Version 3.2 of XFree86-3.2 could be used without problems.

Cause:

The handling of the buit in Trident chipset is problematic in XFree86-3.3 .

Solution:

Please read the article x_notebook.html for background-information.

In order to switch on the corresponding drivers reliably, you can try to enter 

        Chipset "tgui96xx"
in Section "Device" in /etc/XF86Config .
