Computer waits while booting during the SMTP initialisation

Symptom:

While booting, the computer finds whenever the SMTP initialisation instead of the mailsystem. There the computer freezes for a long time (ca. 30 seconds) before it continues as if nothing would have happened.

Cause:

sendmail tries to find out the computer name. If that takes long, then sendmail tries to find out the name on a DNS server. This demands a name server or a correct file /etc/hosts.

Solution:

Please proceed as follows:

Please enter the command
```
hostname -f. 
```
You will get the computer's full name. As an example it is assumed here, that your computer is called Emil.homedomain.de.
Look at the file /etc/hosts e.g. by
```
cat /etc/hosts
```
Do you find there your computer name again? You do not?
Enter then with an editor your computer's name's choice. In the file /etc/hosts the two following lines should at least appear:
```
127.0.0.1      localhost
192.168.0.1    Emil.homedomain.de Emil
```
Should you have no special IP address (e.g. 193.141.17.205), then you can use harmless the 192.168.0.1. This is freely given for the private, not Internet use. Please enter as well the IP address in the file /etc/rc.config.

Re-start to finish sendmail:

cd /sbin/init.d; ./sendmail stop; ./sendmail start
