Strange signs in the console during and after X

Applicable to

Symptom:

After the X server's start, the signset in the console is mutilated. This remains when the X server is exited. On the other hand, future (blind) entries can be done.

Should the last one not be correct, please read the article Mutilated sign display when leaving X.

Cause:

In some graphic cards, the X server can overwrite the area in which the graphic card saves the console signset, with the graphic screen's content.

Solution:

Curing symptoms: Enter (blind) the following command in the console. If necessary write yourself a short script:
```
setfont /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts/default8x16
```

Getting rid of the causes: Lower the virtual screen size in the file /etc/XF86Config:

Section "Screen"
   Driver          "Accel"
   Device          "Primary Card"
   Monitor         "Primary Monitor"
   ...
   SubSection "Display"
      Depth        ...
      Modes        ...
      Virtual      1280 1024
   EndSubSection
   ...

Change the values after "Virtual". Remove high resolutions from the line "Modes".

Getting rid of the causes: Lower the graphic card's memory size in the file /etc/XF86Config:
```
Section "Device"
   Identifier      "Primary Card"
   VendorName      "Unknown"
   BoardName       "ELSA Winner 2000AVI"
   VideoRam       2048 
EndSection
```
Change the value after "VideoRam" to a value that is as small as your graphic card's memory.
