Applixware 4.3.7 refuses to install

Symptom:

Applixware 4.3.7 fails to install but pronounces an error as: error -2 : Bad Header Reading Header : success ab.

Cause:

The Applixware package has been packed using RPM 2.4.8 and there is an RPM 2.4.1 on your S.u.S.E. Linux 5.0.

Solution:

You will receive a disk as a workaround. Thus you are able to install:

1. Login as root.


2. 
Insert the disk into your floppy drive. We assume that your first floppy drive
is a 3.4" drive. (A: under DOS). Now you may mount this floppy:

                mount -t minix /dev/fd0 /mnt


3. Copy the new RPM from floppy to /tmp

        cp /mnt/rpm.new /tmp


4. Unmount the floppy drive

        umount /mnt


5. Insert the Applixwaer 4.3.7 CD into your CD-ROM drive and mount it

        mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt


6. You will most definitely get some warning messages. These may be ignored.


7. Unpack the  Applixware base package

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx1/axbase.rpm


8. Unpack the needed  Applixware package (english)

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx2/apxgrm.rpm    German version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx2/apxeng.rpm    Englishe version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx2/apxfrn.rpm    French version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/bookgrm.rpm   German version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/bookeng.rpm   English version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/bookfrn.rpm   French version


9.2 Unpack the help package

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/helpgrm.rpm   German version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/helpeng.rpm   Englishe version

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/helpfrn.rpm   French version


9.3 Unpack the spell checker and the thesaurus


        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/axlang.rpm


9.4 Unpack the clipart package

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/axart.rpm


9.5 Unpack Postscript documentation

        /tmp/rpm.new -Uvh --force /mnt/suse/aplx3/axdocu.rpm


10. Unmount the CD-ROM

        umount /mnt


11. Login as normal user and start Applixware.

        applixware
