g77: cannot open crtbegin.o

SuSE Linux: Version 6.0

Symptom:

When calling the Fortran compiler g77, a message like the follwoing appears :

/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open crtbegin.o: 
No such file or directory                   

Cause:

Probably the wrong backend is installed. Instead of gcc 2.7.2.x the egcs is needed. This is due to a small bug in the package description of g77.

Solution:

Start YaST and uninstall the package gccfront (series d). Install the package egcs instead.
