PPP: Authentication on PAP, CHAP

How can I pass the authentication data during the PPP handshake?

Enter your login names and passwords into the file /etc/ppp/pap_secrets and /etc/ppp/chap_secrets (according to the protocol).

Example for a /etc/ppp/pap_secrets file:

#User      Server              Secret       adresses
emil       *                   Passwort

Dialin-Server

If an (i)pppd should be dial-in server, enter the following into the corresponding option-file (PAP in this case) :

-chap
+pap

The usernames/passwords are read accordingly from /etc/ppp/pap-secrets. You can also read the passwords from /etc/passwd (or /etc/shadow). Simply enter an additional line login into the options :

-chap
+pap 
login

It is not necessary in this case that /etc/ppp/pap-secrets exists at all. If it does exist it should contain at least the following line :

*   *   ""

The access can then be denied by entering the user with an invalid password :

Username   *   -
