SuSE Linux: Version 5.2
KDE can only be started from the corresponding fvwm menue.
There is more functionality included in KDE than just a window manager ;-)
Search for a line like
FIXLIST="fvwm fvwm2 fvwm95 bowman afterstep ctwm mwm mlvwm qvwm amiwm olvwm olwm twm cdesim kwm"in
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx and change it according to the following example :
FIXLIST="startkde fvwm fvwm2 fvwm95 bowman afterstep ctwm mwm mlvwm qvwm amiwm olvwm olwm twm cdesim kwm"
Then set the environment variable WINDOWMANAGER such that it contains the value startkde
(this is explained in the article below). Enter the following line into your ~/.bashrc :
export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/startkde
