"installpkg", "pkgtool", "removepkg"

SuSE Linux: Versions since 5.3

Request:

You want to install/uninstall a "TGZ" package. However the tools that you've used so far ("installpkg", ...) cannot be found anymore in the system.

Procedure:

The Slackware tools ("installpkg", "removepkg", ...) have security holes ((tmp-exploits). Since "RPM" is the package format of S.u.S.E. Linux since a longer period of time now, it appeared to us that it was not worth the effort to maintain and include these tools into the distrubtion any longer.

Solution:

• Use YaST in order to install a "TGZ" package (see the article below), or

• Use the tool "alien" in order to convert the "TGZ"-package into a "RPM" package. You can then install it with rpm (see pakete_manuell.html for further information).
