Error while updating RPM packages

SuSE Linux: Versions since 5.1

Symptom:

You try to install a single package from one of the »S.u.S.E. Linux« distribution 5.1 CDs without having updated the base system. You will get an error message as:

        error -2 reading header: Unknown error

Cause:

The old package manager (rpm version 2.4.x on »S.u.S.E. Linux« 5.0 ) does not recognize the new format of the packages.

Solution:

There are two possibilities:

• Do an update of the complete base system as given in our manual.
• If you cannot upgrade the base system you may try to update the rpm package (version 2.4.10) (do this at your own risk!). Then you need to update YaST as well! In our given example we assume that CD1 is mounted to /cdrom:

          rpm -U /cdrom/unsorted/rpm/rpm.rpm
          rpm -U /cdrom/suse/a1/yast.rpm
  

Now you may install further packages using the new YaST.

Be aware that there are system programs included in YaST that make use of the new libc.so.5. Please do only choose this way if you're absolutely sure what you are doing! Of course problems that may arise are not included in our installation support!
