SuSE Linux: Version 5.3
Kernel: Version 2.0.35
Printing under a running kernel 2.0.35 is very slow: often delays of several seconds occur after a few lines of printing only.
The kernel 2.0.35 contains a bug in the parallel port driver.
There are several ways: please try the ensuing possibilities in this very order:
lx_suse" contained in
S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3. Then printing should work as usual with most
printer models and interfaces.
Try to re-insert the "lp" module from the 2.0.34 kernel.
A pre-compiled version can be downloaded
here: lp.o.gz (ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/kernel/lp.o.gz).
Note: Please use wget to download this file. If you
absolutely insist on doing it with Netscape, please take into account
the information in article ke_netscape-ftp.html.
If you want to try this module, you must first ensure that
the actual "lp" module is not loaded. Check this
as "root" by means of the lsmod
command and unload the module in case of need:
rmmod lp
Now you can unpack and load the downloaded module. Note: please
don't forget the path "./" preceding the
filename:
gunzip lp.o.gz insmod ./lp.o
Now, try to print something. If all works well, copy the downloaded
lp module into the standard modules directory:
cp lp.o /lib/modules/2.0.35/misc/lp.o
normal, ECP, EPP.
tunelp offers the options "-t" and
"-w"; try to modify the timings.
See the manpage of tunelp for details.
