Kernel: Versions since 2.0.33
A local filesystem or removable medium (CD-Rom, floppy, etc.) shall be accessible automatically whenever needed.
Meanwhile this is supported by the kernel. The SuSE kernels are preconfigured accordingly. If you want to compile a kernel yourself, please make sure to activate
Kernel Automounter Support
in the kernel configuration (as a module preferrably).
Furthermore please install the package autofs and set the variable
START_AUTOFS in /etc/rc.config to "yes".
autofs is configured through /etc/autofs.master and other
dependant files (see the man page of autofs). Here's an example of /etc/autofs.master:
/misc /etc/auto.misc
This specifies, that the file /etc/auto.misc is responsible for all "mounts"
under the directory /misc. /misc must be created. /etc/auto.misc
might look like
cdrom -fstype=iso9660,ro :/dev/hdc
floppy -fstype=auto :/dev/fd0
(please adapt the device specifications according to your needs).
Now, when you change to /misc/cdrom, the CD-Rom will be mounted automatically and you can
access the data on the CD-Rom. It is even easier to create a symlink in your home directory to that
file :
cd
ln -s /misc/cdrom CD
This way you can also access the CD-Rom under ~/CD !
Hint: Whenever you change the configuration of the autofs, stop that service :
/sbin/init.d/autofs stop
and start it again :
/sbin/init.d/autofs start
autofs can do many more things ! autofs is e.g. well suited to
manage many remote file systems in large networks without using too many ressources.
