ftp: machine cannot be reached via ftp after an update

Applies to

SuSE Linux: Version 5.2

Symptom:

You'va updated your system to S.u.S.E. Linux 5.2 . However after the update it is impossible to access the machine via ftp. You get an error message like

421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

Cause:

Since S.u.S.E. Linux 5.2 wu-ftpd is used as the standard ftp-server. It is started automatically when the machine is accessed via ftp over the network. However "wuftpd" isn't installed automatically during an update although the corresponding command gets inserted into /etc/inetd.conf.

Please note that after the update root is informed about this fact via e-mail.

Solution:

There are two possible solutions :

Install the package "wuftpd" (series n). Please also read the information contained in the subdirectory /usr/doc/packages/wuftpd .
Search for the following entries in /etc/inetd.conf :
```
ftp     stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/tcpd  wu.ftpd -a
# ftp   stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/tcpd  in.ftpd
```
Remove the comment sign at the beginning of the second line and insert it at the beginning of the first line instead. This way ftpd becomes the standard ftp-server again. Save the file to disk and restart inetd afterwards :
```
kill -1 `cat /var/run/inetd.pid`
```

Please note :

It is recommended to change to wu.ftpq even with older versions (>= 5.0) of S.u.S.E. Linux
