Old CDs and new YaST

Symptom:

The new YaST (from version 0.53 on) does not recognize older S.u.S.E. CDs (before S.u.S.E. Linux 4.2) as installation CDs.

Cause:

YaST tries to automatically recognize the version by the CDs ID, and thus to prevent a "chaotic installation" of different versions by mistake. The system's consistence (only through identification of version numbers) could get lost by that.

Solution:

The following procedure is offered as a remedy to that problem:
  1. Mount the CD manually (e.g. to /cdrom) 
    mount -r -tiso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom

  2. Change to the suse directory on CD 
    cd /cdrom/slack

  3. Start YaST

  4. In YaST choose the option "Choose installation sources" in menu "Configuration for the installation" and in the next mask, "Installation from a reachable directory".

  5. /cdrom/slack is declared as directory name, and the new YaST can be installed from the old CDs.
