Printer : checklist

Checklist for printing with apsfilter

• Is apsfilter (package aps, series ap) installed ?

• Was apsfilter configured with YaST or /usr/lib/apsfilter/SETUP ? If you want to configure a Ghostscript-uniprint driver, you should use /usr/lib/apsfilter/SETUP.

• Are the packages nkita and nkitb (series a) installed ?

• Is the kernel configured with TCP/IP support?
  Can ping localhost be executed successfully ?
  Can ping `hostname` be executed successfully ?

• If the printer doesnīt support a resolution of 300x300 dpi: Have you adjusted the default resolution (300x300 dpi) to 360x360 dpi in
  /usr/lib/apsfilter/bin/apsfilter (around line 262) or /etc/apsfilterrc (around line 268ff) by setting the variable GS_RESOL ?
• Did you sepcify the correct printer device (/dev/lp?) for apsfilter ?
• Can you send data directly to the printer interface with cat? You can test this with e.g.

  cat /var/log/boot.msg > /dev/lp?
  

  If this does not work, it is most likely due to one of the following reasons :

  • No Parallel printer support is available in the kernel. This support must either be compiled directly into the kernel or must be available as a module. Is it possible to load the lp-module ? Try the following command :

    modprobe lp
    

    Or do the boot-up messages (see /var/log/boot.msg) show a line like

    lp1 at 0x0378, (polling)
    

  • You have a Plug-and-Play BIOS and have set the interfaces configuration to auto . Please assign an adress to the interface explicitly (standard : 0x0378 resp. only 378).

• If you use the option -P in conjunction with the command lpr, no blanks may be inserted in front of the printer name.

• What is the output of the command lpc status ?

• Try lpc up all.

• Have you tried to switch the printer interface to interrupt mode with tunelp (see the man-page man tunelp for further details)?.

• PLIP may not be chosen in the kernel configuration.

• Determine the suitable device for apsfilter from the output of the call gs -h (apsfilter uses ghostscript!). A newer version of Ghostscript (that we're not allowed to put on the CD in the moment), may be already available via FTP; Please read the following article of our support database for further information: new_gs.html.

• Comment out the last line in file /etc/apsfilterrc. Then the desired resolution for the device specified in the last topic of this HOWTO is passed to the printer with the dvips option -P. You should also comment out the assignment to HAVE_MAKETEXPK around line 239 .

• In the case of teTex simply call texconfig and define a standard printer in the menu item "MODE - default mode (xdvi/dvips/mf)".
  If you don't want to use texconfig, the file config.NAME must be created in the dvips search path.

• If the environment variable TEXINPUTS must be set, there has to be a colon at the end, e.g.:

  • for the bash: export TEXINPUTS=$HOME/TeX//:

  • for the tcsh: setenv TEXINPUTS ~/TeX//:

  Otherwise teTex won't find the system-wide (La)TeX-macro files !

• If anything is installed in /usr/lib/teTeX/ (e.g. own LaTeX styles), texhash should be called afterwards!
